Meet Ryan Christadler, the Owner Behind AutoNorth Auto Repair in North Bay
When you bring your car to AutoNorth Auto Repair, the man who owns the shop is Ryan Christadler. He is a Toyota certified technician with hybrid certification. He is also a full time firefighter in North Bay.
That second job is the first thing to know about this shop, because it changes how the whole place runs. The fire service is Ryan's living. AutoNorth is not how he feeds his family, and he says so plainly: "This isn't my main bread and butter." He left a good paying job at the dealership to do this, and he is not in it to squeeze you. Nobody at AutoNorth needs to sell you a repair to make the month work.
A Toyota Certified Technician Who Became a Firefighter
Ryan had a passion for cars as a kid, and his first job in the trade was at a Jiffy Lube. He did his schooling at Centennial College and his apprenticeship at Aurora Toyota, where he became a Toyota certified technician. Then he took a job at the Toyota dealership in Huntsville and bought a house in Muskoka in 2015. In 2018 he opened his own garage there, and he drove a lumber truck for a while too.
That same year he joined Muskoka Lakes as a volunteer firefighter. He took a stack of extra courses, earned his fire certifications, and started applying for full time work. He knows firefighters who applied for seven years. From the day Ryan started applying, he was hired in six months, and he has worked fire in North Bay since 2022. For a couple of years he commuted up for his shifts. About two years ago he moved to North Bay for good.
Why AutoNorth Pays Straight Time Instead of Flat Rate
For his whole career as a technician, Ryan was paid flat rate. He was good at it. Flat rate pays a mechanic a set number of hours per job, however long the job really takes, so beating the clock pays and finding more work pays. "You're competing against the guy next to you," Ryan says. "It was a hostile environment."
When he opened AutoNorth in September 2025, he put his technicians on straight time. They are paid for the hours they work. Nobody earns more by rushing your vehicle, and nobody earns more by finding you extra work. On a slow afternoon the crew cleans their bays, gets the shop ready for the morning, and clocks out from their phones. Ryan pays it because he has been on the other side of it.
What a Safety Certificate Means to a North Bay Firefighter
Firefighters see people on their worst day, and Ryan says that shows up every time he signs a safety. AutoNorth is a licensed MTO Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, and he knows some shops will write a safety just to make the dollar. He will not.
"I'm proud to have my license. I don't want to lose my license, and most importantly I don't want people to be unsafe," he says. "It takes one thing to happen, and I'm the guy that signed the safety."
The fire hall taught him integrity, and he keeps it off duty too. Now and then a small, quick job that most shops would bill for goes out the door at AutoNorth with no charge. It is how Ryan builds trust, and how a first visit turns into a long relationship.
What to Know Before You Walk Into Any Auto Repair Shop in North Bay
Here is what Ryan wishes every driver knew. Not everything on a list needs to be done this second. A good shop looks out for you instead of upselling everything to someone who does not know better.
At AutoNorth, your inspection report comes to your phone by text and email, with photos and video of your own vehicle. Items are sorted by priority, so what is urgent gets done now and the rest goes on a list for next time. That way you can budget for it, instead of hearing six months later that somebody should have told you.
The Second Opinion That Ended With an Invitation to Newfoundland
A student down from Newfoundland for school brought Ryan a work order from another shop. She wanted a second opinion. Ryan read it over and found it misdiagnosed, with prices he could not believe. Her car was a Toyota with about 50,000 kilometres on it, and he told her to save her money and put it toward tires she actually needed. Her dad called from Newfoundland. They talked for 45 minutes, and he invited Ryan to his house any time he is out east. That is the review that means the most to him.

AutoNorth's First Year in North Bay
The first job through the door was a friend's truck, and it was a big one: a full motor replacement. The truck is still running. In its first year AutoNorth went from Ryan working alone to three employees, plus a second hoist, a drive on hoist, an alignment machine and a dual refrigerant AC machine.
The hours are real. Ryan comes off a shift in the morning and heads to the shop to catch up on paperwork, then jumps in with the crew. After one big fire this year he was on the first truck in and the last truck to leave, up all night, and went straight to the shop. His fiancée Sarah has been in his corner through all of it, however late he works. When he is not at the fire hall or under a car, you will find him fishing, snowmobiling, outdoors, or on a snowboard once in a while.
What to Expect When You Call AutoNorth
Call the shop or send a text and describe the problem. You can drop your vehicle after hours with the key drop and it gets started first thing, and the shop shuttle can drive you home. Before anything is fixed, the report lands on your phone and you approve or decline each item yourself. Financing is available for bigger jobs.
Ryan's line on all of it is simple. "Treat people like you want to be treated."
