Blue Sky Electrical & Construction

Meet Kevin Turenne, the Electrician Behind Blue Sky Electrical & Construction

When you call Blue Sky Electrical & Construction, you get Kevin Turenne. He has been an electrician for twenty years, counting his apprenticeship, and he has run Blue Sky for ten. The name is a mouthful, and he knows it. Most people in town just call it Blue Sky, and they know who you mean.

It is a small shop on purpose. Right now it is Kevin and Colter, who started with him as a co op student and has since finished his hours and his schooling. Kevin has run a crew as big as six, and he would grow again, but only for the right fit. Colter, he says, he would put up against any electrician.

One homeowner who hired them to get her house ready to sell summed them up as friendly, efficient and professional.

An Electrician in North Bay Who Also Builds

The Construction in the name is real. Blue Sky does renovations, from full basements to kitchens, bathrooms and room additions, and exterior work like architectural stone and the prep around new windows and siding. Kevin enjoys the change of pace, and it keeps his crew working through a North Bay winter. Once the ground freezes, nobody is bringing in a new electrical service, so the electricians move inside and build.

On a renovation he keeps the electrical and his own trades close, and he brings in the people who specialize in the rest: a plumbing and heating contractor he has worked beside for years, a drywaller, a concrete cutter. In his words, "I'll stick to what I do really well." He sees that as serving you better, not passing you off.

What to Know Before You Hire an Electrician in North Bay

Kevin's advice is simple. Hire a licensed professional, and get the work written up on an invoice.

He turns down a good share of property management work for exactly this reason. Many managers want a handyman for everything, and what worries Kevin is not the easy jobs. It is the moment somebody without the background starts playing with a panel and does not know it has become dangerous. That is a liability you do not want, and it is the kind of work he wants documented.

He works to the Ontario Electrical Code, a book about two inches thick, and he treats what is written in it as gospel. Lately he has added AI to the toolbox for the installs he does not do every week, asking it code questions with the Ontario rules set and checking the answer against the book he still keeps on hand.

Custom Tile and Showers in North Bay, Done Properly

Tile is the work Kevin is enjoying most right now, and he keeps hearing the same thing around the city: people cannot find a tile installer who does it properly.

He recently tore out a custom tiled walk in shower in a brand new build. When his crew dug deep enough, they found the waterproofing had been done wrong right from the slab up. Kevin figures it would have failed in about a year. The homeowners watched how much work it took to put it right, and after that they understood what they had been paying for.

On a smaller job, a young homeowner wanted a funky black and white retro tile in her bathroom. Another installer would not come out to look at it. Kevin did, and caught that she was short on material before a single tile went down. She wanted a niche, but the walls were framed with two by threes, so he talked her into shelves instead. He built her a quartz sill at the window, tapered so the water runs off, and told her that quartz is still porous, so if she burns candles on it, put something underneath or the colour of the wax will soak in. That is the kind of thing he tells you so the job lasts.

Commercial Lighting Retrofits and Industrial Electrical Work

Blue Sky works well past houses. Kevin has done commercial lighting retrofits as a subcontractor, including relighting an entire big box store, and retrofit work has taken him as far as Amherstburg, Thunder Bay and Belleville, two or three weeks at a stretch living out of a suitcase. He has also worked in power generation, where the systems are engineered to their own standard, and on the commercial and industrial side Blue Sky handles panel upgrades, three phase power, switchgear, distribution panels and new services.

Close to home, the commercial work is lighting retrofits and smaller projects for businesses, some of them through a contractor who has had the same clients for years and wanted Kevin back on his jobs. As Kevin told him, he is still here.

Electrical Services for North Bay Homes

On the residential side, Blue Sky handles panel and service upgrades, wiring for renovations and new installations, pot lights, ceiling fans, hot tub wiring, electric in floor heating, landscape lighting, backup generators, EV chargers, and knob and tube rewiring, which most insurers want out of a house.

One recent North Bay home got close to the full list: complete landscaping, an in ground pool with a motorized cover strong enough to drive a four wheeler across, a pump house, storage and a recessed fireplace. Blue Sky did all of the electrical.

Kevin works mainly in North Bay and the surrounding area, and he quotes commercial work across Northern Ontario.

What Customers Say About Kevin and Blue Sky

The reviews come back to the same few things. Kevin talks the job through with you before the work starts, and his suggestions tend to make it better. When something goes wrong, like a breaker tripping the night after an inspection, the crew is back first thing in the morning. And he gets there when you need him, including for the homeowner who opened a wall to put in a door and found an electrical cable running through every stud he had to take out.

A North Bay Tradesman Who Gives Back

Kevin has been bringing students into the trade for years through the co op program with the Near North District School Board. Colter came to him that way. When a placement does not work out, Kevin is honest with the student and careful about how he says it: it does not mean you are not good enough, it means you need to look at where you are and where you want to be. The best of them get his recommendation to keep going in the trade.

He took on a U15 select baseball team as head coach with no child of his own on the roster, just because he wanted to. And he plays league pool on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

When a job is not his, he says so. He will point you to the contractor he trusts for siding, or for high voltage line work, and when a supplier once suggested he could add five or ten points on top for making the introduction, he said no. It did not sit right with him to take a cut for a phone call.

What to Expect When You Call Blue Sky Electrical & Construction

Kevin keeps his schedule fluid on purpose. His customers give him room to book the work when it suits both of you, which is what leaves him space for the last minute calls, like a baseboard heater that stopped working.

When he comes out to quote, he brings a measuring tape and a lot of questions, and he usually stays about an hour, because there are that many details and every job is personal. Estimates are free.

What he holds himself to is customer satisfaction and the quality of the work. He still lives by the rule he started with. You are only as good as your last job.
