Posh Beauty Spa

Dawna Timony, owner of Posh Beauty Spa, at a downtown North Bay cafe

Meet Dawna Timony, the Esthetician Behind Posh Beauty Spa in North Bay

When you book at Posh Beauty Spa, Dawna Timony is the one who does your pedicure, your massage, your brows or your facial, and the one who sees you out the door. She has been a certified esthetician for sixteen years, and for about six of those she taught the next generation of them. Her clients notice. One Google review calls her "very well educated as an aesthetician" with "such a relaxing aura to her personality, and so does her spa."

Her tagline is Your Beauty Is Our Passion, and she means it plainly. She enjoys making people feel good about themselves. Some clients come in having a day, or a week, and a pedicure is the thing that gets their mind off whatever is going on. "If I can make them feel better for an hour or make their week better," she says, that is the job.

From Esthetics Instructor to Spa Owner in North Bay

Dawna took the esthetics program at Modern College of Hairstyling and Esthetics in Sudbury and was certified in 2010. She is from French River, and a job brought her to North Bay: a position as one of the esthetics instructors at the Modern College campus here, where she taught for about six years. She met someone from North Bay, and she stayed.

In her words, she came full circle. She wanted to be back in the swing of things, dealing with customers, doing the services and making those connections. Posh Beauty Spa opened its doors in December 2024, in the Music City building where Algonquin Avenue meets Oak Street. Today Dawna runs it on her own.

What to Know Before You Book an Esthetician in North Bay

Do your homework, Dawna says. Talk to people you know who have been to the spa you are considering. Most estheticians are in it for the love of the service, but some let things slide that should not, and you end up just another number. The one that matters most is cleanliness. A spa has to meet government standards, and "good enough" is not good enough. You should know you are walking into a safe, clean space.

On gel versus acrylic, she is practical. They are different products, but as long as your natural nail health is good and your esthetician takes proper care of the nail, application and retention should be the same for both. Acrylic is a harder material and tends to wear better. Gel can be just as good. It comes down to your wear and tear, the application, and the care taken applying it.

A Calm Day Spa in Downtown North Bay

Reviews of Posh keep landing on the same words: spotless, fresh, calming. That is on purpose. Dawna keeps the space serene, with nothing over the top in the decor and nothing over the top in the scents. Calm, subtle, clean, and nothing that is going to overstimulate you.

She reads the room, too. If you come in chatty, you will probably chat the whole way through, and that is great. If you come in quiet, she lets you be quiet. When she gives a massage she does the front first and the back last. Clients often talk through the first half, and once they flip over, the conversation ends.

What she hopes you feel when you leave is that you could relax, and that you were heard. "Let them talk," she says. "Let them have their moment." She calls herself your esthetician and your confidant. As she puts it, for fifty five dollars you get a pedicure and a therapy session.

Pedicures, Massage, Facials and Waxing in North Bay

Posh Beauty Spa offers classic, spa and supreme pedicures, manicures, gel overlays, facials including Hydra Peel, detox, anti ageing and back facials, relaxation massage from thirty to ninety minutes, body and facial waxing, lash lifts and tints, brow tints and brow lamination, and makeup for brides, proms and graduations. The massage is relaxation massage, not registered massage therapy. Every pedicure except the cut and file includes a massage.

Two services surprise people. The salt rock massage uses small balls of Himalayan rock salt, heated in massage oil so they are warm when they touch your skin. And the Vajacial is, in Dawna's words, a facial for your nether regions. For women and men who shave or wax and get ingrown hairs or blackheads, it cleans, steams and extracts.

Foot care is for everyone, she says, young or old. Not many people look at the bottom of their own feet, and an esthetician is often the first to notice something worth showing a doctor. If she sees it, she will tell you.

Posh also hosts spa birthday parties, with packages aimed at kids four and up, and Dawna offers in home services, up to 30 minutes outside North Bay for an additional travel fee. If the spa is closed, she is likely out on one.

The New Sleepy Pedicure at Posh Beauty Spa

What Dawna is most excited about right now is her supreme pedicure. It already has the full cut and file, exfoliation, a paraffin treatment and a massage. She has added a different scrub and steam for the feet, which opens the pores so the moisturizer goes in deeper.

Now she is turning it into what she calls a sleepy pedicure. There is no soak. You lie on the massage table under blankets, with a mask if you want one, in a darker room lit only by ambient light and the overhead light she needs to see your feet. You still get the cleanse and the exfoliation. Sleep through the whole thing, or chat through it. Your choice.

Gift Cards and the Full Day Spa in North Bay

The Full Day Spa Treatment is $220 for a 45 minute massage, a classic pedicure and a Hydra Peel facial. Mostly women book it, and a lot of men call to book it for their wives. Gift cards are available, which makes Posh an easy Christmas answer.

For North Bay Local readers, Dawna is offering the Express Package, an express facial plus a pedicure cut and file with polish, for $70 instead of $80.

Room for Another Practitioner at Posh

Dawna has a fully equipped spa and is looking for like minded service providers to rent space in it: a registered massage therapist, a permanent makeup artist, a tattoo artist, or another esthetician. That includes new estheticians trying to get into the market who do not have the means to buy the equipment, furniture and product it takes to start. She is not looking to be anyone's boss. She wants something closer to a cooperative, where you find your footing and manage your own business.
