Meet Blake Tomlinson, the Coach Behind Discipline Over Comfort in North Bay
When you book a conversation with Discipline Over Comfort, you talk to Blake Tomlinson. He is the founder, the only coach, and the person who answers your texts between sessions. He grew up in North Bay from the age of two, his family is still here, and he is back in town building a coaching practice for people who, in his words, are done lying to themselves.
Blake does not hide where that line comes from. For ten years addiction ran his life. He lost everything, lived on the street and out of his car, and did time in the North Bay Jail. He is twenty two months clean, and he will tell you he is recovering in the present tense, every day. One client put it this way: from the very first contact with Blake, my life started to change.
From a Jail Cell in North Bay to Life Coaching
The turning point was a book. About a week into his sentence, after days of sleeping through depression, Blake picked up The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. The first habit, be proactive, landed hard. He had been complaining and playing the victim like everyone around him. Then he read Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, looked at his cell wall and thought, I have no right to be upset. This is all on me. I can choose to be happy.
He wrote a vision on that wall: a healthy mind, body, spirit and soul. Six or seven months later he was walking to the gym at five in the morning and realized he was living it. Since then he has read more than 200 books on psychology, philosophy and self improvement, practised a daily virtue for over a year, lost about sixty pounds, and started writing a book of his own. He also spent ten years as a financial planner before the addiction took over, so he knows what it is to be the person everyone leans on.
What to Know Before You Hire a Life Coach in North Bay
Blake wants you to know one thing first: coaching is not therapy. Therapy looks back at past trauma and works to heal it. Coaching looks forward, from where you are now to where you want to be. It is a partnership, not a lecture. Blake asks questions and reflects back what you say until you hear it yourself. He has plenty of practical advice, but he only offers it when you ask for it, because advice handed out unasked makes people shrink.
When you are choosing a coach, ask what they have lived through. A coach does not need a hard past to be good, but life experience puts drive behind the work. Then listen for the joy in how they talk about their own life. If it is not there, keep looking.
Discipline Over Comfort: Identity, Virtue and Structure
The name comes from a simple rule Blake uses on himself. Make the decision before the situation shows up, so your emotions do not make it for you. When the cake is on the table, when the workout is due, when someone is angry at you, ask one question: who am I? Discipline, the way he teaches it, is not punishment. It is freedom from impulse.
His method is built on three ideas. First, identity drives behaviour, and behaviour feeds identity back, so change happens through small daily actions, not big Monday resolutions. Second, practising virtues, the 24 character strengths from positive psychology researcher Martin Seligman, rises above the character defects you have been fighting. Third, structure beats motivation. Blake uses the Harada method, the behavioural goal map Shohei Ohtani used at seventeen, where one long term goal sits in the centre and the daily actions that feed it fill the boxes around it. You can read his whole framework, 40 virtues in eight pillars, on his website.
What Clients Say About Coaching With Blake
Blake's ideal client is what he calls the Provider, usually thirty to fifty five. A parent, a business owner, a teacher, a lawyer, a pharmacist. Everyone leans on them and nobody sees them sinking. They work hard, show up for everyone but themselves, know what to do and do not do it. His job is to build structure around them so they can see they are already enough.
The results are on his website in the clients' own words. One client discovered that her habit of over preparing was a coping mechanism, took a risk in a meeting with her boss, got an apology and a raise. A business owner and father says his good relationships are great and the difficult ones have become easier. A student stuck in anxiety and video games learned to make decisions with confidence. What Blake hopes you say after working with him is that you found the power to choose your own life.
Life Coaching Programs: The Free Five Day Reset and the 90 Day Identity Reset
Every program starts the same way, with a free thirty minute conversation. You do most of the talking. You get an honest audit of where you are, a clear picture of where you want to be, and a couple of action steps to take before you ever pay a dollar.
From there Blake runs what he calls the DOC Staircase. The first step is a free five day online reset, one hour a day, that you can drop in and out of. The second is the 90 Day Identity Reset, built to take you from point A to point B with weekly sessions, text access to Blake and a daily structure you can measure. The top step, The Standard, is one to one coaching with tighter accountability and direct access between sessions. Clients in North Bay meet him in person or online, and he already coaches people as far away as British Columbia.
Giving Back in North Bay at the Gathering Place Soup Kitchen
For the past year Blake has volunteered at the Gathering Place soup kitchen, serving the people he used to stand beside. He knows what it is to not know where the next meal comes from, and he says a place like that is where he gets to be his best self when things are hard.
He also coaches several people who cannot pay, and has watched people go to rehab, come out, and stay clean, including one who had used opiates for thirty years. He leads group hikes up the crosses at Madawaska, stopping along the climb so everyone writes down a few honest answers about who they are. He is building a resiliency talk for schools, because he thinks the next generation is quitting too early, and he would like to tell his story in front of students, trustees and anyone else who will listen.
What to Expect When You Book a Conversation With Blake
You book thirty minutes on his website, by phone or on Google Meet. Blake takes a limited number each week. Do not book if you want encouragement; book if you are ready to be asked what you have been avoiding. You leave with one commitment, written down, and if you work together the next session opens with whether you did it.
Blake is up at 4:45 every morning, trains six days a week, meditates for half an hour, reads fifty pages before most of North Bay has had breakfast, and walks a dog across town for two hours. Clients come first, so he fits sessions around your schedule, seven days a week. His last word for North Bay: coaching is not what you think it is. It is a mirror, so you can see who you are and who you want to become.
