Meet Sean Mulder, the Advisor Behind Sean Mulder Financial in North Bay
When you book a conversation with Sean Mulder Financial, you get Sean. He is a licensed life insurance agent and a licensed mortgage agent with Haystax Mortgage, he works for himself, and he is not tied to any one insurance company. Because he is independent, he can work with all the big names in Canada, including Canada Life, Sun Life, Desjardins and Manulife, to find the best and most unbiased solution for each client. His own website says it plainly: no stiff suits, no scripted pitches, just a real conversation about your money.
Sean moved to North Bay in November 2021. His wife is from here, his brother has lived here for about fifteen years, and his mother came north during the pandemic. With another baby on the way, he and his wife wanted family close by. His work can be done from anywhere, so they chose here. Today he is a father of four.
From Kitchen Renovations to Life Insurance in North Bay
Sean first earned his insurance licence in 2015. At the time he was also doing handyman jobs, and that side took off and grew into a kitchen renovation company. As he got closer to forty and the tools got harder on the body, he bought a transportation franchise, and then more units of it. When the pandemic shut the renovation business down, he went all in on transportation, built it up, and sold it after the move north.
Then came what he calls a lot of soul searching. He wanted work where he still controlled his own time, and he wanted to offer something people need whether the world shuts down or not. He came back to insurance and investments. He has been licensed since 2015, but it is really the last three years that he has focused his attention on serving clients full time.
Why Critical Illness Insurance Is Personal for Sean
The real reason came later. Sean's niece was diagnosed with childhood cancer at three years old. Around the same time, his mother was diagnosed with cancer. There was no coverage in place for either of them. In a time of uncertainty, Sean says, peace of mind is a lot better than a GoFundMe and the kindness of others. Thankfully, both are doing well today.
The family is still active in the childhood cancer community, and they come out to the flag raising North Bay holds every September for families who have been affected. It is why Sean does this work. He wants to keep other families from carrying that financial strain on top of everything else.
What to Know Before You Buy Life Insurance in North Bay
Ask Sean what he wishes you knew before sitting down with anyone in his industry and he has two answers.
The first is to be careful with anyone who tries to sell you something in the first meeting. In his experience they are usually looking at one piece and not the whole picture.
The second is that it is not one size fits all. Term insurance and permanent insurance do different things. There are products built for children, and there are non medical options for people with existing health conditions. Sean explains why he recommends what he recommends, so you know what you have and why you have it.
The most common problem he sees when he reviews a plan is too little coverage, usually because people assume the right amount costs too much. Often he can combine different products to make it more affordable. The second most common problem is no plan at all.
Income Protection for Tradespeople and Young Families
Sean's typical client works in the trades or is raising young kids. Usually a health scare started the conversation, their own or someone's they know. His question for anyone on the tools is simple: what happens to your income if you get hurt? Nine times out of ten the tradesperson is the business, and when they stop, the income stops about a week later. Disability insurance is there to help replace that income, and critical illness coverage is there when a serious diagnosis lands.
Because he built a renovation company and a transportation business from the ground up, Sean also likes to get into the weeds with business owners: what is working, what is not, and who they should meet. He likes connecting people.
RRSP, RESP, FHSA and TFSA Without the Jargon
On the investment side Sean helps with four registered accounts: the Registered Retirement Savings Plan, the Registered Education Savings Plan, the First Home Savings Account, and the Tax Free Savings Account. Where you start depends on your situation. He plans from the exit first, which means he looks at what your retirement will look like before he picks an account. If you already have a pension, he looks hard at whether an RRSP makes sense, since it defers tax and does not remove it. For a family with young kids he usually starts with the RESP, because of the government grant toward a child's education, and then the FHSA if you do not own a home yet.
Mortgages round it out. Sean finds a mortgage often ties into retirement planning, especially for North Bay homeowners sitting on a paid off house who want options for funding retirement or helping their children.
His website also has free tools you can try before you ever talk to him, including a two minute Investor Profile quiz and a Debt Snowball Calculator.
What Clients Say About Sean Mulder
Ask Sean what he would want in a five star review and it is not the policy. It is the care taken, and that you walked away understanding what you have. His clients say the same thing. Brian Denes called him knowledgeable and efficient and wrote that Sean "made the entire process seamless." Ramona Harris thanked him "for always going above and beyond."
Serving North Bay, Ontario and British Columbia
Sean works with families across Ontario and British Columbia. Many of his clients are back in the Kitchener Waterloo area or further away, so most meetings happen over Zoom. If you are in North Bay, he would rather meet face to face.
He is looking at joining Rotary to get more involved in the community. He also calls himself an introvert, which surprises people who meet him. His idea of a good day is a quiet hike in the bush with his kids and no cell phones.
What to Expect When You Book a Chat With Sean
The first meeting costs nothing and takes about forty five minutes. Bring any policies you already have, if you have them. Sean does not do high pressure. He gets to know you, where you are now, and what you want. If you already have coverage he tries to build on it before replacing it, because insurance gets more expensive with every birthday and a new policy starts the two year contestability period over again. Then he builds a roadmap, and you meet a second time to look at a few options and decide what makes sense.
His goal for next year is not a dollar figure. He counts families, and helping more of them than he did this year would make it his best year yet.
