Meet Merissa Mills, the Photographer Behind PhotoMill Photography in North Bay

When you book PhotoMill Photography, the person who shows up is Merissa Mills. She is the whole company: the planning texts about what to wear, the white van full of backdrops and props, the camera, and the editing that turns a thousand frames into the ones you keep. Her clients say the same thing in review after review. She made us feel comfortable, she was patient with the kids, and then, almost as an afterthought, the photos were beautiful.

Merissa was born in Petrolia, a small town outside Sarnia, and her family moved to North Bay when she was going into grade eight, having never been this far north even to visit. She went to high school here, her daughter just started high school this fall, and after years away in Windsor she came back to North Bay for work. She has been home since.

A Registered Social Worker Who Picked Up a Camera

Merissa is a Registered Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work from Windsor, and she still works in the field. She founded and directed a nonprofit in Windsor, worked as a community engagement specialist for another, has practised as a therapist and registered social worker in nonprofits and educational institutions, and now works in nonprofit administration.

The photography started by accident. When she moved back she lived on Lake Nipissing, went out every evening to watch the sunset, and started shooting it on her phone to show her friends in Windsor what the north looked like. The phone could not carry the feeling, so she bought a used Canon Rebel on Facebook Marketplace for seventy five dollars. Landscapes led to people, because, as she puts it, what is more beautiful than human connection in that setting. Two camera upgrades later she shoots on a full frame Canon R8.

Why the First Ten Minutes Matter More Than the Pose

Ask Merissa how she gets a nervous family to relax and she describes it the way a therapist would. You cannot do good work without rapport. She learns the kids' names, talks about their outfits, walks everyone through what is going to happen, and takes the pressure off. Nobody has to be perfect or perform. Her line is simple: she is not there to make you look a certain way, she is there to capture you as you are.

That is why her website says come as you are and means it. Kids do not have to behave. You do not need to know how to pose. She guides with movement and conversation instead of stiff positions, and PhotoMill is openly LGBTQ2S+ inclusive and body positive, written on the page on purpose so nobody has to wonder.

What to Know Before You Hire a Photographer in North Bay

The thing Merissa wishes people understood is turnaround. Expectations run from "will I have them tomorrow" to "will this take three months," and the honest answer is about three weeks for a regular session and about three months for a wedding or event. There is a reason. In a forty five minute session she takes somewhere between one and two thousand photos, then goes through every one of them for the small moments, a micro expression, the corner of a smile, that make a portrait feel like the person. You receive the best of them, edited, not the whole card.

The other thing: ask. She will help you plan outfits, pick a location, and get the house ready for an in home session. Most people are hesitant to ask, and she would rather you did.

Family, Newborn, Pet, Wedding and Creative Sessions

PhotoMill covers families, couples, engagements and proposals, maternity and newborns, weddings and vow renewals, pets, headshots, and creative and styled sessions. Most of it happens outdoors on the trails around North Bay in natural light, and summer is the busiest season by far, with fall close behind. She travels anywhere in Ontario, and anywhere within an hour of North Bay has no travel fee.

Her first paying job was a pay what you can pet session for an older dog. The family tipped five dollars on a twenty dollar session, the dog passed not long after, and they were grateful to have the photos. Legacy sessions for pets near the end of their lives grew out of that day, and that family are still clients and friends. She has photographed their daughter from birth to her second birthday.

The Mobile Studio That Comes to Your Living Room

North Bay does not have many photography studios, so Merissa built one that travels. A Dodge Grand Caravan carries a backdrop stand, rolls of seamless paper, lighting, and a growing collection of props, including a matching set of 1950s Samsonite luggage she drove to Huntsville to buy for a recent campaign with Arella Health. About half an hour of setup turns your living room into a studio. For a simpler in home session it is just the lights, the camera and whatever props the day calls for. A real studio is in the works, opening late 2026 or early 2027 once the date is set.

Merissa knows that people are not paying for photos. They are paying for the experience from the first message to the delivery, and the photos are how they remember it. Her reviews prove it. On October 4 she is covering Run for the Cure in North Bay. Cancer is close to home: her brother is in remission and her dad is dealing with it now, and this is her way of doing something.
